1) Your septic tank smells when it rains because the air is heavy and does not allow the methane gases to take off through the vent. It stays low to the ground due to the atmospheric pressure and it may smell like rotten eggs.
2) After a septic pumping, it will smell like rotten eggs, also known as methane gas, which will dissipate after a half hour.
3) If the septic system smells like rotten eggs in the bathroom, this could be caused by a loose toilet gas ring around the toilet. If there is even a pin size hole in the wax ring, it will leak methane gas. If it smells even when it does not rain, then replace the wax rings.
The Septic System Smells in Your Home
After it rains, the ground is saturated, which slows down the leaching action in your leach field. This results in a rise in the tank liquid level.
The rise increases backpressure on the gases in the tank, which then temporarily increases the gas present in the drain, waste, and vent system throughout your house.
What we’ve noticed often is that any home with more than one bathroom suffers from this unwanted smell from time to time. That’s because there’s typically one bathroom that is seldom used. As a result, the water in those traps has evaporated, which leaves the drain lines open to the house.
How to Get Rid of the Septic Smell in Your Home
One simple DIY solution we recommend to our clients is at least once every couple of months run water in all of your sinks, bathrooms, showers and drains. This ensures there is a proper level of water in the traps.
If you have a basement with floor drains, we suggest that you pour a couple of quarts of water into each drain or a tank treatment called CCLS.
Septic System and Septic Tank Smell Not Going Away?
The evaporation theory isn’t always correct. There may be something more sinister and complex at play. But it’s extremely difficult to assess the problem unless a septic specialist can come in and inspect your environment.
That’s why we suggest you get in touch with a trusted septic service company for an inspection. Furthermore, we also recommend that you have your septic tank maintenance regularly. Regular maintenance can save you more than 65% over a 10-year period and can prolong the life of your septic system.
